Bernie Monk is a local legend, having been at Paroa Hotel since his mother and father arrived in 1954. He grew up at Paroa Hotel where he attended the local Greymouth schools before heading away to boarding school at Silverstream College in Wellington. Bernie has done a number of trips all over the world and has many friends and foes from all corners of the planet. Bernie captained West Coast at rugby for many years and would be one of the West Coasts most capped players. Bernie has a passion for rugby, but his biggest passion is meeting people and hosting them at Paroa Hotel, he often says “no person is more important than the next person that walks through the door” and his hospitality reflects this.
